Jena Catania, Evanston Staff Therapist

Providing therapy for Evanston adults and adolescents.

Jena Catania

“I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership, and find the relational aspect of therapy to be an integral piece in making strides towards meeting client’s needs and goals. Confronting the difficulties and pain in life is often challenging and uncomfortable—as such I strive to create a safe space for my clients to process authentically. I know each client is unique and work to meet the client where they are, with empathy, humor, support, challenge, and encouragement throughout our journey together.

“In creating a safe and supportive space, I utilize interventions from a variety of therapeutic frameworks in order to meet the needs of my clients individually. I pull mainly from multicultural and feminist/relational theories, and often utilize DBT and mindfulness skills to help clients process and understand themselves on a deeper, more fulfilling level.

“As a queer-identified woman I can uniquely understand the complexities of questioning one’s sexual identity. As such, helping clients navigate the process of acceptance, owning, and loving oneself, through compassion, care and support in sessions are integral to exploring this aspect of identity.”

Background

Jena Catania (she/her/hers) earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Illinois School of Professional Psychology (ISPP) at National Louis University in 2021. She received her Master’s in Clinical Psychology from ISPP in 2017. Jena completed her pre-doctoral internship at Psychological Consultations, working mostly with the LGBTQIA+ and HIV impacted population. She provided individual therapy as well as facilitated support/process groups, provided standard and neuropsychological testing and feedback, and supervised practicum students individually and within a group setting. Jena has been a therapist at Mindful Psychology Associates since 2019.

Throughout Jena’s training, she has worked in inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric hospitals, community mental health settings, therapeutic day schools, and private practices. During her time as a student at ISPP, Jena served as a teaching assistant for various courses, often focusing on multicultural psychology and interventions, basic therapy skills, and personal and professional development for first year graduate students. Jena is completing her postdoctoral fellowship at Mindful Psychology Associates and is supervised directly by practice owner Jennifer Contarino Panning, Psy.D.
